“Tuesday, November 9, 1965, 5:27 p.m. to Wednesday, November 10, 1965, 10 a.m. EST— Blackout: QUEENS
‘Wait, please!’ Mae ran down the hallway for the elevator and, for those moments, her numb gum ceased being an annoyance. The single door was six inches from closing but suddenly reversed direction. When it slid back far enough, she entered.”
About “Darkness”, she writes:
We are a (supposedly) civilized society. We control light and dark and, theoretically, ourselves. But, when light fails and darkness reigns, the best of humanity does not always surface. Humans can too easily revert to beasts. Underpinning this story is what I’ve always believed: society does not alter as much by revolution as it does by evolution.
