Our next spotlight author, Marge Simon graces A Darke Phantastique with “Selected Poems: Spider Poem, The Little Man, Dream the Titanic”. Here is a snippet:
Needing neither sun nor moon,
my mistress spins her webs.Long of leg, with umber hair
drawn to fine designs with clip and braid
the bright black eyes, the liquid voice,
she was made to confound men,
and I was one.
She says about the three poems:
“The Little Man”—this one just “happened,” as I felt like writing something totally weird, short, and dark. The vulture on the tree just happened to be out there one evening. Or it could have been a raven, or a wicked little man, grinning at me in the twilight.
“Dream the Titanic”—everyone has seen the film(s), knows the story. But this poem is a metaphor for tragedy in the life of a rock star. I’m always curious about rock musicians, as many have had an unhappy childhood. It’s about coming to terms with fate as the band on the Titanic. As simple as that, and not.
“Spider Poem”—one that was written for, but wasn’t included in, a new collaborative collection with Mary A. Turzillo, Sweet Poison. It is a satire on sex (bondage, if you will) with a nod to the arachnids. I was thinking of sex and spiders—the Black Widow in particular. Mary had a slightly different take, with a chilling poem about the sexual habits of the praying mantis.
Marge Simon’s works appear in publications such as Strange Horizons, Niteblade, DailySF Magazine, Pedestal, and Dreams & Nightmares. She edits a column for the Horror Writers Association Newsletter, “Blood & Spades: Poets of the Dark Side,” and serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees. She won the Strange Horizons Readers Choice Award in 2010 and the SFPA’s Dwarf Stars Award in 2012. She won the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in Poetry with Charlee Jacob for Vectors: A Week in the Death of a Planet in 2008, and again in 2012 for Vampires, Zombies & Wanton Souls.
